Companies Using AI To Catch Thieves : Are we trusting AI too much?

AI And Retailers

Many big and well know retailers of Australia have started to use AI to catch petty thieves, retail stores like Bunnings and Woolworths, have started to use
Auror an AI which according to their CEO is a software used to catch shoplifters.

According to the CEO of Auror, it works by the following method .

How It Works.

So when an Image is uploaded to the platform, then that image or picture can be referenced across crimes reported today, to see if it’s the same person who’s committed those other offences.

The AI is strong and smart enough to alert the security staff in real time if there is any wrong doing that the AI has detected.

Does it Impact the general consumer?

No, it does not as the general consumer will likely never have an interaction with auror.

Is It Safe.

Well, Kmart and Bunnings are at this point in time are being investigated by Australia’s privacy watchdog for their use of another facial recognition software application.

But if we are to believe the CEO of Auror Mr Thompson and according to him, it works differently as it does not do live facial recognition and doesn’t reference any part of the internet.

Yet it is still a scary concept as privacy laws are still lagging behind.

But before that, if you’re liking what’s written here, please follow (Yes , YouTube tactics)

The law Enforcement :

As countries like New Zealand lose millions of dollars a day to petty thefts which are left unreported.

As the CEO of Auror says.

"This information that’s being captured by retailers isn’t new, but they’re just making it much easier to identify the repeat people who are targeting them,"

So in theory, it works with the police around the country to make it easier for retailers to give provide evidence.

Summary

Should we fear it?

Yes and no?, It depends on the privacy laws, of they’re lacking very much in your country then this tech can be used for other purposes, good or bad.

Is it good?

Yes, it is amazing, for retailers, it makes it easier to capture people who have repeatedly shoplifted, and for the general consumer it gives us an ease of mind.
